          Days and Preschool Days, Too:
A treasury of anecdotes culled from my work

          THE POPSICLE BOSS

               In the summer
we do anything we can to enable the children to play outside comfortably.
Our main cooling strategies are water and popsicles. Popsicle time,
every afternoon at around 4 pm, also allows a segue from raucous mid-afternoon
water play. Children who love water have been squealing in delight,
teasing a teacher who then squirts them with a prolonged stream from
          the hose.
At popsicle time we sit quietly on chairs
and lick frozen treats made by pouring juice into little cups, inserting
a flat stick, and popping them into the freezer. After popsicles, children
often go inside for quieter play.
Early one recent afternoon a boy asked
me in the play yard whether today's popsicles were red ones. I didn't
know, as I hadn't made them. Nor was I free to go inside to check.
"You'll have to go in and ask Miss Rose,"
          I told him.
"Is she the Popsicle Boss?" the little
          guy asked me.
She is now. And I suspect it'll be harder
for her to shake that nickname than it is to shake one of our popsicles
          off its stick!
