MAXWELL SMART MEETS
            ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS

(The first two lines in stanzas one and three
are from St. John's poem, "Dark Night of the Soul")

            On a dark night,
            By the secret ladder concealed,
I went forth without being observed,
In one of the stage-set cities
            That comprise our world,
            Nobody knowing my name,
            AND--LOVING IT!
I entered this dream of a world,
(Everything, everyone in their rightful places)
            Walking among birthday-cake buildings
            And forest-fresh trees,
            Through parks with fountains
            As fresh as lemonade,
            AND--LOVING IT!
          On a dark night,
My house being now at rest,
Seeing Creation the way it was meant to be seen,
With eyes of appreciation and gratitude,
I was walking where I had been set loose
            In this happy, holy world,
            AND--LOVING IT!
